Every once in a while, an author comes along whose books make you want to immediately read everything else they have written. That was my experience with Sian Ann Bessey. I had the opportunity to read one of her books as an ARC last year and completely fell in love with her writing, so I was particularly excited when I had the opportunity to read When You Rescued Me. I’m happy to report that it lived up to my expectations—and then some.

Set during the Georgian era, When You Rescued Me combines historical romance with adventure, intrigue, danger, redemption, and second chances. There is a lot happening in this story, but Bessey manages to weave all these threads together in a way that kept me engaged without ever making the story feel unnecessarily complicated or rushed.

What I Loved No. 1: An Unexpected Historical Perspective

One of the things I appreciated most about this book was its historical perspective. As someone who studied European history, I always appreciate when an author’s research is evident on the page. But what particularly caught my attention here was the perspective on the American War of Independence in 1776.

So often, when I encounter this period in historical fiction, the story is told from the American side. When You Rescued Me gave me an opportunity to experience this period from the British perspective, which was refreshing and fascinating. The author clearly put thought and research into the historical setting, but the history never overwhelmed the romance or the story. Instead, it created a backdrop that made the characters’ circumstances and choices feel more meaningful.

What I Loved No. 2 Second Chances, Redemption & the Past

At the heart of the story is a theme I always appreciate in romance: redemption.

Samuel Ross is a man carrying the weight of his past and trying to decide what comes next for him after his service in the British Navy. His journey is not simply about finding love; it is about figuring out who he is now and whether he deserves the second chance that life offers him.

And then there is our heroine, Hannah. She is intelligent, pragmatic, capable, and very much a woman ahead of her time. While her father is recovering, she steps in to manage his business, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of herself and those around her.

What I especially enjoyed was how well these two complemented each other. She isn’t just there to rescue the hero emotionally, nor is Samuel there to sweep her off her feet. They each bring something important to the relationship.

And their past history makes their connection even more meaningful. She isn’t simply a woman Samuel happens to meet as an adult. She is someone who had an impact on his life when they were younger, and their reunion forces both of them to reckon with the past and what it means for their future.

What I Loved No. 3: Let’s Talk About the Adventure…

I went into this expecting historical romance, and obviously I was here for the romance. What I wasn’t quite expecting was so much action! And I loved that aspect.

There are secrets, danger, twists, turns, and moments that kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The story has a wonderful sense of momentum, and just when I thought things were settling down, something else would happen.

And importantly, despite a fairly large number of characters and multiple storylines, I never felt lost. The supporting characters are an important part of the story rather than simply filling out the background. There are quite a few of them, but Bessey does an excellent job giving them purpose and making it easy to follow who everyone is and how they fit into the larger story.

What I Loved No. 4: There Is Yearning.

You knew we were getting here. Samuel Ross is a yearning man. And we love that for him. 😂

There is something particularly satisfying about a hero who is carrying around all of those complicated feelings and trying to figure out what to do with them. Samuel’s emotional journey gives the romance an added layer that I really enjoyed.

As always, I will be filing the appropriate paperwork with the Department of Yearning Studies. His application has been accepted.

My Final Thoughts

When You Rescued Me gave me everything I want from a historical romance: a compelling historical setting, characters with emotional depth, a capable heroine, a complicated hero, adventure, intrigue, second chances, redemption, and a romance that takes its time.

I especially appreciated the British perspective on the American War of Independence and the obvious historical research behind the story. But ultimately, it was the characters—and the emotional journey between them—that kept me invested. Sian Ann Bessey has once again reminded me why I enjoyed her writing so much the first time around.

And apparently my fall reading season has decided to spoil me, because this is another five-star read.

If you enjoy historical romance with adventure and intrigue, capable heroines, complicated heroes, second chances, redemption, and a healthy amount of yearning, When You Rescued Me deserves a place on your TBR.
