At this point, I think we’ve established (at least with my Instagram followers) that if you give me a mafia or organized crime romance, there’s a pretty good chance I’m going to pick it up. Throw in danger, morally complicated characters, a protective MMC, and a heroine who can hold her own? You already have my attention.

And Heart of a Killer by Shalana Battles had me from the beginning.

Let’s start with one of the most important aspects of a dark romance: chemistry. One of my favorite things about this book was the connection between Cassius and Melinda. Their chemistry was insane, and what surprised me was how quickly I could feel it. Some of their earliest interactions happen through text messages, and somehow Battles still managed to create this palpable tension and chemistry between them before their relationship really had a chance to develop.

And Cassius— I love a protective MMC, but I especially love one who understands that protecting a woman doesn’t mean taking away her agency. Cassius has that dangerous, powerful presence I want from a hero in this kind of world, but his dynamic with Melinda never made me feel like she had to become smaller for him to be strong. He could protect her while still allowing her to be capable in her own right—and I really appreciated that balance.

Melinda also gave me plenty to root for. Their relationship felt like a partnership rather than simply the familiar dangerous man swoops in and saves the woman dynamic. Now do not get me wrong: there were times that I wanted to slap him silly, especially when dealing with Melinda, but that made their romance—and their chemistry—even better for me.

More Than a Mafia Romance

While the romance absolutely delivered, I also appreciated that Heart of a Killer had a deeper storyline running beneath it.

The plot involving sex trafficking gives the book a much darker and more serious undercurrent. It raises the stakes beyond the romance and brings some genuine weight to the story. This is still very much the dark, dangerous world you expect from an organized crime romance, but there’s more happening here than simply falling for the dangerous man. It was interesting to see how inter-agency groups came together to combat this epidemic around the world.

There were a few moments when I thought the pacing moved a little too quickly. Certain developments could have benefited from a little more time to breathe, particularly because I was invested enough in these characters that I would have happily spent more time with them.

But did that stop me from devouring the book? Absolutely not.

And then there is that unexpected element. If you’ve already read the book, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, I refuse to spoil it for you. It was something I wasn’t expecting at all, and it ended up being one of my favorite aspects of the story. Go into this one without knowing too much and let it surprise you.

Final Thoughts

Heart of a Killer gave me so many of the things I love about mafia and organized crime romance: danger, tension, chemistry, a protective hero, a strong heroine, and a darker world that extends beyond the central romance.

I was invested in Cassius and Melinda. I cared about what was happening around them. I loved their chemistry. I loved the unexpected direction the story took. And when I finished, my immediate thought was that I needed more from this world. That makes this an easy five stars for me. 🖤

And apparently, I’m officially invested in this series.
